ELEMENTS OF THE HEALING PROCESS

In order for healing to come from such a profound experience as sexual abuse, we believe that there are many types of support that have to work
together to fully address the complex needs of a survivor. As a spiritual
support group, we want to be one of those vital pieces of healing. We
understand we cannot do it alone and feel there are five important pieces
to the process of healing:

  • Companion Support  -- Friends, family, significant other.
  • Professional Support  -- (Experienced and knowledgeable about
the effects of sexual abuse) Psychologist, psychotherapist, social
worker, psychiatric nurse practitioner, art or music therapists.
  • Spiritual Support  -- Mary’s Hope, your own personal spiritual advisor, worship services, retreats.
  • Self-Help  -- Telling your story, journaling, reading appropriate
support material, actively participating in your work of healing,
attending seminars, conferences, etc., that will further your
progress and seeking additional support during difficult times.
  • Physical Support  -- Needs to be unique for each individual but
might include massage or other body work, yoga, meditation,
doctor visits, medication, self-defense classes, exercise. It should
always include good food and rest.

Remember, healing is always a process. It takes time.
It comes in steps, not all at once. Be gentle with yourself.

"And then the day came when the
risk to remain tight in a bud was
more painful than the risk it took
to blossom."
